INDIANTOWN, Fla. — A 40-year-old man died early Sunday in a head-on collision on State Road 710, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. near the intersection of State Road 710, also known as Beeline Highway, and Southwest Silver Fox Lane.
Authorities reported that a 2015 Kia Optima traveling north crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 2021 Toyota Tundra. The impact caused the Kia to catch fire.
The driver of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene. The 41-year-old driver of the Tundra from Indiantown was transported to the hospital via LifeStar medical helicopter.
Martin County Fire Rescue has responded to 42 accident-related calls on State Road 710 this year. In a previous incident, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek described the road as a “death trap” following a fatal crash in January.
Local residents have expressed ongoing concerns about the road's safety, with plans from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to widen the roadway from two lanes to four. However, construction is not expected to commence until 2031.
In the interim, FDOT has begun implementing safety improvements, including new pavement and signage.
