NORTH STONINGTON, CT — A sixth-grade student has died after being struck by a bus Wednesday morning, according to North Stonington Public Schools.
The student, identified as Torren O'Grady, was hit on Old Colony Road before school started. Connecticut State Police responded to the scene near Kingwood Drive and Meadow Park at approximately 8:27 a.m.
Authorities confirmed the incident involved a bus and a pedestrian, resulting in serious injuries. The school district announced O'Grady's death later that afternoon and is cooperating with state police during the ongoing investigation.
The district emphasized the preliminary nature of the details and directed all inquiries regarding the investigation to the Connecticut State Police. Counselors and emotional support services, including support dogs, will be available for students and staff at North Stonington Elementary School in the coming days.
Local leaders, including Governor Ned Lamont, extended their condolences. Lamont stated, “My heart breaks for Torren O'Grady's family, friends, classmates, teachers, and the entire North Stonington community as they confront an unimaginable loss.”
State Representative Greg Howard also expressed his sorrow, highlighting the tragedy's impact on the community and the need for support services. “No family should ever have to endure the heartbreak of losing a child,” he said.
The investigation remains active, and lane closures are in place as authorities process the scene.
