VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — A head-on collision on M-43 in Waverly Township left one woman dead and three others injured late Friday night.
According to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office (VBCSO), the crash occurred just after 11:30 p.m. when an SUV traveling westbound crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with another SUV. The driver of the westbound vehicle, a 37-year-old woman from Lawrence, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured include a 27-year-old Lawrence woman, a passenger in the westbound SUV, and two 18-year-olds from Kalamazoo and White Pigeon, who were in the eastbound vehicle. All three were seriously hurt and transported to area hospitals for treatment.
Emergency responders closed M-43 for approximately four hours to facilitate rescue operations and clear the crash site.
Authorities are investigating the incident and suggest that heavy rains may have reduced visibility prior to the collision.
