LEVAN, Utah (KUTV) — A California woman faces charges after a multi-vehicle crash on I-15 in Juab County that resulted in one fatality on June 12, 2026.
Christine Chao, 44, has been charged with second-degree felony automobile homicide related to alleged distracted driving.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:41 p.m. when Chao's vehicle struck the rear of another car, which was slowing due to construction. This impact pushed the second car into a third vehicle. All three cars exited the roadway as a result.
A passenger in the rear vehicle sustained critical injuries and later died at the hospital.
Authorities said Chao admitted to being “at fault” after the crash. Investigators noted the absence of brake marks at the scene, suggesting Chao did not attempt to stop before colliding.
Following a warrant, investigators examined Chao's phone, reportedly finding she accessed a pornographic website less than two minutes prior to the collision.
Emergency services responded to the scene, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
No additional information regarding lane closures or tows has been released.
