New Iberia, LA—April 15, 2023: A classic car crashed into a crowd at the Louisiana Lao New Year Festival parade, injuring 18 people Saturday afternoon.
Authorities reported that the driver, Todd Landry, 57, of Jeanerette, was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired and other charges. Witnesses described chaos as festival attendees rushed to assist the victims, some of whom suffered serious injuries.
The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m. A blue Chevrolet vehicle struck a grassy median and overturned a golf cart, leading to multiple injuries. Videos showed attendees providing aid to victims, including one trapped beneath the car.
Emergency services, including the Louisiana State Police, responded promptly, and the injured were transported to local hospitals. Lane closures were implemented as authorities investigated the scene.
Landry is currently held at the Iberia Parish Jail, with no prior criminal history. He faces charges of first-degree negligent injury, careless operation, and possessing an open container of alcohol.
