SUNBURY, Ohio — A semi-truck struck a stopped pickup on I-71 north near U.S. 36 around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, killing three.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred in the northbound lanes near the Tanger Outlet exit, where about 20 vehicles were stopped in the right lane to merge.
Video released by the Ohio Department of Transportation shows the semi, driven by 50-year-old Modou Ngom of Columbus, hitting the pickup. Authorities said a man and woman in their 30s and a young child, all from Ashley, died. Their names have not been released.
Authorities said three other people were injured and are expected to survive. Details on medical transport were not immediately available.
The area is an active construction zone tied to the ODOT Sunbury Parkway project, with traffic slowed and concrete barriers in place at the time, according to ODOT.
Ngom is charged with vehicular homicide and is being held at the Delaware County Jail on a $500,000 bond. He is expected in court on April 21, authorities said.
The cause remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Authorities have not said whether speed or the work zone contributed.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Delaware County recorded 13 fatal crashes in 2025 and 19 in 2024.
