Victims of Fatal Sunday Crash Near Corsica Identified.

CORSICA, S.D. — Two individuals died and two others were injured in a crash on S.D. Highway 44 Sunday evening.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred around 5:57 p.m. near mile marker 325. Carey Jay Utterback, 52, of Mitchell, was driving a 2016 Fusion eastbound when the vehicle left the roadway, entered the south ditch, struck a field approach, vaulted over a fence, and rolled before coming to rest in the field.

Utterback and passenger Peggy Lynn Iverson, 72, of Sioux Falls, were at the scene. Two additional passengers, 37-year-old Bethanie Lynn Iverson and 36-year-old Benjamin Lyle Iverson, both from Sioux Falls, suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries and were to a hospital in Sioux Falls.

Authorities reported that Utterback was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash; however, Bethanie and Benjamin Iverson were not. The use of a seat belt by Peggy Iverson is under investigation.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting an ongoing investigation. All information is preliminary and subject to change.
