MORONI, Utah (KUTV) — A mother and her newborn died after a vehicle struck the woman while she was walking near 1808 E. Dairy Lane on Tuesday at 7:55 a.m.
According to Utah Highway Patrol (UHP), Rebecca Hafen, who was pregnant and walking on the shoulder of the road, was severely injured in the incident. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Emergency responders delivered the baby following the accident, and the newborn received care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. A subsequent update from a GoFundMe campaign for the family revealed that the baby also passed away.
The fundraiser stated, “Today, our family received more heartbreaking news. Tyson's sweet baby passed away,” adding that the family was able to say goodbye before the infant's death. The family is now coping with the loss of both Rebecca and their newborn.
Authorities indicated that no charges are anticipated against the driver unless speed is found to be a contributing factor. Any potential charges will be assessed by the Sanpete County Attorney's Office.
The GoFundMe campaign aims to assist the Hafen family with medical expenses and support during this difficult time.
