Two Dead in Wrong-Way Collision on Interstate 95 in Medway
Medway, ME—Two people were killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 on Monday night.
Luis Mendoza, 20, of Indian Township, was reportedly driving a stolen 2011 Toyota Camry south on the northbound side of I-95 around 9:21 p.m., according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
East Millinocket Police observed Mendoza at approximately 9:38 p.m., traveling the wrong way at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Authorities attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Mendoza continued into a construction zone near mile marker 244, where southbound traffic was diverted onto the northbound lanes.
On the bridge, north- and southbound traffic was separated by concrete barriers. Mendoza's vehicle collided with a 2005 Honda Accord driven by Sandra Lacombe, 67, of Medway, resulting in fatal injuries for both drivers, Moss confirmed.
The crash is under investigation.
