HAMPTON, Va. (TNND) — A 1-year-old child died on Thursday following a crash involving a 14-year-old driver, reportedly the child's mother, who was under the influence.
The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 2 a.m. on Interstate 64 in Hampton. State Police reported that the vehicle swerved off the road, struck a guardrail, and collided with a barrier.
According to authorities, the child was not properly restrained during the crash and sustained serious injuries, later succumbing at a local hospital. The 14-year-old driver also suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital; her current condition is unknown.
Authorities confirmed that the teen was driving under the influence and was not wearing a seatbelt. She has been charged with driving under the influence, driving without a license, and a child restraint violation, with additional charges pending.
Family members revealed that the child was scheduled to celebrate her 2nd birthday on April 4. The child's grandmother expressed deep sorrow, stating, “This is the hardest.”
