Three killed in helicopter crash-landing on Kauai, Hawaii.

HANALEI, Hawaii (TNND) — Three people died and two others were injured after a tourist helicopter crashed on Kauai's Kalalau Beach Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The helicopter, operated by Airborne Aviation and carrying one pilot and four passengers, crash-landed on the sandbar around 3:50 p.m., approximately 100 yards off Kalalau Beach, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Emergency response teams, including the Kauai Fire Department, assisted in rescuing and evacuating the two survivors, who were transported to Wilcox Medical Center for medical attention.

Cmdr. Andrew Williams of the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu expressed condolences, stating, “We are greatly saddened by the loss of three lives in this helicopter crash.” He added that the agency appreciates the coordinated rescue efforts.

The helicopter was part of a sightseeing tour that showcases Kauai's canyons and shorelines. Local officials, including Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami, praised the prompt response of first responders. “Whenever somebody puts their feet on our soil, they're one of ours,” Kawakami stated.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Lane closures and traffic disruptions may occur as authorities continue their work on the scene.
