CHILDRESS, Texas (KVII) — A Texas state trooper was killed in a line-of-duty crash on Wednesday near Childress following an attempted traffic stop on US-287.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Trooper Sergio Romero, 27, attempted the stop around 4:00 p.m. when a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled out in front of him, causing a collision with his patrol unit. Trooper Romero died at the scene.
Before joining the Department of Public Safety in 2025, Romero served with the Hall County Sheriff's Office. He was stationed in Childress at the time of his death.
Trooper Romero is survived by his wife and two young sons.
