CHILDRESS, Texas (KVII) — A Texas state trooper died Wednesday in a crash while conducting a traffic stop on US-287.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Trooper Sergio Romero, 27, was involved in the incident around 4:00 p.m. Authorities reported that a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled out in front of him, resulting in a collision with his patrol unit. Trooper Romero was pronounced dead at the scene.
Romero joined the Department of Public Safety in 2025 after previously serving with the Hall County Sheriff's Office. He was stationed in Childress.
Trooper Romero is survived by his wife and two young sons. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and further details on lane closures or towing services were not immediately available.
