Seven Killed in Cessna Citation Crash in Statesville, North Carolina
STATESVILLE, N.C. — A Cessna Citation C550 crashed shortly after takeoff on December 18, 2025, killing seven people, including retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle.
The incident occurred around 2:41 p.m. while the aircraft was departing from Statesville Regional Airport, located about 45 miles north of Charlotte. Those aboard included Biffle, his wife, their two children, and two friends, along with one of the friends' adult sons.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), preliminary findings indicate no evidence of catastrophic engine failure. Both engines, manufactured by Pratt & Whitney, did not demonstrate signs of uncontained failure, which typically results in debris being expelled.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, where a post-impact fire consumed much of the fuselage. Authorities closed surrounding roadways for safety during the recovery process.
Witnesses reported that prior to the crash, the pilot, identified as Dennis Dutton, experienced engine power discrepancies during the takeoff roll. Cockpit voice recordings disclosed discussions regarding inoperative indicators and potential flight instrument failures.
NTSB officials stated that the final report on the crash will be released within 12 to 24 months. The investigation is ongoing, with Pratt & Whitney fully cooperating with authority inquiries.
No additional injuries were reported on the ground.
