Cyclist Killed in Crash in McKinney Early Monday Morning
McKINNEY, TX — A tragic accident claimed the life of a decorated cyclist Monday morning near Alma Drive and the Sam Rayburn Tollway service road.
Dory Selinger, a three-time world champion and Paralympic gold medalist, was struck by a vehicle during a routine morning ride, according to McKinney Police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Selinger's wife, Laura, received an alert from his tracking device shortly after 6 a.m., indicating he had been in an accident. She rushed to the location, not anticipating the worst outcome. “I never expected that he wouldn't be alive,” she said.
Authorities confirmed that Selinger was the only individual involved in the crash. Emergency responders arrived, but he could not be revived.
Selinger was known for his exceptional resilience, overcoming a devastating 1993 crash that resulted in severe injuries and the loss of part of his right leg. He won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics and earned additional medals in Sydney in 2000.
Jim Davis, a friend and fellow cyclist, noted that Selinger's death marks the second loss in their cycling group within a month. “For us to lose two people in the span of a month is crushing,” he said, emphasizing the need for increased driver awareness around cyclists.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details regarding lane closures or any potential charges.
Selinger is survived by his wife and children, who are now focused on mourning the sudden loss of their loved one.
