NEW ORLEANS — An Orleans Parish sheriff's deputy, Bennie Collura, was severely injured on Feb. 5 while performing a escort.

According to authorities, Collura was involved in the accident during his escort duties, requiring extensive medical aid and anticipated months of recovery. “He's going to be off his feet for the next few months,” said Sgt. Jamil Champagne, with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office (OPSO). “Unfortunately, the type of injury he has will leave him bedridden for a while.”

The accident occurred on the same day as the funeral for Jefferson Parish Deputy Chris Ohlmeyer, who was killed in a similar incident. The two events highlight the hazards law enforcement officers face on the road. “We share the road with motorists and cyclists; please slow down and stay safe,” Champagne added.

Collura, a 15-year veteran with OPSO, has served in various roles, including detective and K9 officer. Tragically, he recently lost his K9 partner, Rex, who was killed in a accident two weeks earlier, further impacting the department's morale.

Deputy Ariel Mercadal said, “That was his best friend. It was hard to watch.” As the department mourns both losses, colleagues are rallying to support Collura during his recovery.

A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with his lost wages and medical expenses. For more information, visit GoFundMe.
