CEDAR CITY, Utah (KUTV) — A motorcycle collision with a school near Cedar City Airport resulted in one fatality on Monday morning.

The crash occurred at approximately 8 a.m. at the intersection of SR-56 and Westview Drive, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. Authorities with the Utah Highway Patrol reported that the motorcyclist was traveling west on SR-56 when an eastbound school bus, turning left on a yellow signal, was struck.

The 42-year-old motorcyclist, whose identity has not yet been released, was wearing a helmet and protective gear but was at the scene.

Iron County School District confirmed its bus was involved but stated that no students were on board at the time. “We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the family of the driver involved in this morning's tragic accident,” the district said in a statement. The incident is under active investigation.

Traffic was severely impacted, with multiple lanes blocked at the intersection, causing delays in both directions on SR-56. Eastbound traffic was backed up to Iron Springs Elementary School, while westbound delays extended past Cross Hollow Road.

This marks the second vehicle collision in the area within a week, raising community concerns about bus safety. “Accidents happen, and non-fault accidents happen,” commented Cedar City resident Joleen Wise, highlighting the need for further safety assessments.

Utah Highway Patrol noted that bus inspections occur several times a year, with drivers required to complete specialized training. No requests for additional safety consultations have yet been received from the school district. Further updates will follow as authorities continue their investigation.
