One person dead, five injured in Fort Collins pickup truck crash during Tour de Fat festival
FORT COLLINS, CO — A pickup truck struck several pedestrians during the Tour de Fat festival on Saturday, leaving one person dead and five others hospitalized, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 11:44 a.m. in the 100 block of West Mountain Avenue near Old Town. A Chevrolet pickup reversed from a parking spot, collided with another vehicle, then drove onto the sidewalk, hitting five pedestrians before coming to a stop against a tree, according to Fort Collins Police Services.
The driver and all five pedestrians were transported to a local hospital, where one pedestrian was pronounced dead. The Larimer County Coroner's Office will release the deceased's identity pending notification of next of kin.
Detectives are investigating the crash to determine if impairment was a factor. Authorities indicated that it does not appear the pedestrians were targeted.
The annual Tour de Fat is a bike-centric festival that attracts tens of thousands of participants, culminating in a celebration at New Belgium Brewery featuring live music, food, and entertainment. The event supports local cycling nonprofits.
