COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two people were killed Saturday in South Linden when a Saturn was struck by a fleeing Prius after an attempted traffic stop, authorities said.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, 71-year-old Franklin Ward and 52-year-old Tessa Berry died after their Saturn was hit.
Authorities said officers attempted to stop a Prius that then accelerated away. Sgt. James Fuqua said the vehicle sped off so quickly officers did not initiate a pursuit.
Police said the 17-year-old driver ran a stop sign before crashing into the couple's car.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said its crash investigation is ongoing and expected to conclude next week. The agency said it intends to seek aggravated vehicular homicide and failure to comply charges against the driver, who is in Columbus police custody.
Columbus police said they are reviewing how officers handled the attempted stop. The crash remains under investigation by Columbus police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
