Fatal Collision at LaGuardia Airport Involves Fire Truck and Air Canada Jet

A fire truck from the Port Authority collided with an Air Canada jet on the runway at LaGuardia Airport at approximately 2:41 p.m. on October 4, 2023.

The incident occurred as the aircraft was landing, resulting in one confirmed fatality—a firefighter—who was at the scene. According to authorities, the fire truck did not have transponders installed, which could have aided air traffic control in monitoring its location. Four other firefighters sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Emergency response units, including the Port Authority Police Department and New York City Fire Department, were dispatched immediately to manage the scene and provide medical aid. Authorities reported that several runway lanes were closed temporarily while investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are both involved in the ongoing investigation. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
