Master Trooper Killed in Durham County Crash Early Sunday
DUKE, NC—A head-on collision early Sunday morning on NC-147 resulted in the deaths of Master Trooper Steven J. Perry and the other driver, identified as Melshawn Moore, 39, of Kinston.
The crash occurred around 2:41 a.m., when a vehicle traveling the wrong way struck Trooper Perry's patrol vehicle. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Trooper Perry, a graduate of the 148th Basic Patrol School, served in Durham County for nearly seven years and was recognized for his dedication to the community and fellow officers. “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Master Trooper Steven J. Perry,” stated Highway Patrol officials. “He was more than a trooper — he was part of our family.”
Emergency response included Durham County Emergency Medical Services, the Durham Fire Department, and the Durham Police Department. The North Carolina Department of Transportation's IMAP Division also assisted.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, with further details expected to be released as they become available. A celebration of life service for Master Trooper Perry will be announced soon.
