Motorcyclist Killed in Kapiolani Boulevard Collision
A 51-year-old motorcyclist died Tuesday afternoon after colliding with a vehicle making a U-turn on Kapiolani Boulevard.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, the collision occurred around 3:17 p.m. when a 67-year-old driver initiated a U-turn from the westbound lanes, striking the motorcyclist who was also traveling west. The impact ejected the motorcyclist onto the roadway.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services reported that paramedics arrived near Mahiai Street, administering treatment for life-threatening injuries. The motorcyclist was transported in critical condition to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle was unharmed and remained at the scene.
Authorities noted that speed does not appear to be a contributing factor to the crash; however, the involvement of drugs or alcohol remains undetermined.
Police closed Kapiolani Boulevard in both directions between Date Street and Waiaka Road for several hours during the investigation and response.
This incident marks Oahu's 23rd traffic fatality of the year, a decrease from 44 at this time in 2022.
