A 51-year-old moped rider died Wednesday following a crash on Kamehameha Highway in Sunset Beach, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:23 a.m. near Ehukai Beach Park. The rider was heading north when he veered off the roadway and lost control, resulting in his ejection onto an unimproved shoulder.

Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and transported the man to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities noted that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Preliminary findings indicate that speed was not a contributing factor; however, the potential involvement of drugs or alcohol remains under investigation.

The investigation is ongoing. This incident marks the 25th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 52 fatalities at the same point in 2025, according to HPD.
