Last Monkey from Jasper County Truck Crash Found
A monkey that escaped from a truck crash in Jasper County has been located. The incident occurred on Interstate 59, north of Heidelberg, last week when a truck transporting 21 monkeys overturned.
According to authorities, video footage from the scene showed monkeys and wooden crates strewn across tall grass beside the highway. Searchers in protective gear scoured neighboring fields and woods for the missing animals.
The monkey was tranquilized Wednesday night on a property near the crash site, confirmed Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries. The truck, operated by PreLabs, was transporting the primates, which have been housed at the Tulane University National Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana. Tulane stated that it was not transporting the monkeys and that they do not belong to the university. The remaining 13 monkeys reached their original destination last week, as indicated by Tulane.
Earlier reports mistakenly claimed a third monkey was dead; however, that information has since been corrected by Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and ensure the safe recovery of the animals.
