DOVER-FOXCROFT, ME—A 73-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run incident on North Street Wednesday evening, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
According to the DOVER-FOXCROFT POLICE DEPARTMENT, officers responded to a report of an unresponsive individual at approximately 8 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Barry Lial of Cambridge deceased at the scene. Initial reports suggested a hit-and-run; however, police later stated that the evidence did not support this claim.
Investigators are collaborating with the MAINE MEDICAL EXAMINER'S OFFICE and the MAINE STATE POLICE MAJOR CRIMES UNIT to clarify the circumstances of Lial's death. The department is requesting public assistance from anyone who was in the vicinity of North Street, particularly between Summer and Winter streets, between 7:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Later developments indicated that authorities now believe Lial was struck by a vehicle while crossing North Street. Surveillance video has captured a light-colored sedan traveling northbound on North Street around 7:55 p.m., and police reported that the vehicle may exhibit minor damage to the hood or windshield.
On Saturday, police confirmed they have identified the vehicle involved in the fatal incident. The investigation continues, and additional details have not been disclosed at this time. Authorities thanked the public for their support and tips during the investigation.
