Laurel woman killed, 12 injured in Highway 84 crash

Lede: A fatal crash on Highway 84 in Jones County Wednesday afternoon resulted in one death and 12 injuries, including 10 children.

Authorities said the incident occurred around 3:35 p.m. when a 2008 Infiniti G35 traveling west on Highway 84 collided with a 2008 Toyota Tacoma going north on Holifield Road. The Infiniti was carrying a group of nine children and was driven by 33-year-old Cecilia Turner of Laurel, who suffered fatal injuries.

Among the injured, a 2-year-old passenger in the Infiniti sustained severe injuries, while eight other children aged 6, 8, 11, 14, 15, 17, and two 12-year-olds received minor injuries. Additionally, two adults, aged 25 and 29, from the Infiniti also incurred minor injuries.

The Toyota Tacoma, driven by a 27-year-old from Diamondhead, had a 14-year-old passenger who received minor injuries. All occupants were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Emergency responders from the Jones County Fire Council provided medical aid, managed traffic control, and extricated one person from the wreckage, according to Public Information Officer Dana Bumgardner.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and no further details have been released at this time.
