Tragedy struck in Kaufman County late Sunday night when a collision involving an 18-wheeler claimed the lives of two children and their mother.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that 38-year-old Va'Necia Williams and her daughters, 14-year-old Sa'Niah and 9-year-old A'veonia, were pronounced dead at the scene. The family's Hyundai had reportedly stalled in the right lane of US-80 when the wreck occurred around 11:35 p.m.
According to DPS officials, the semi-trailer was traveling eastbound on US-80 when it struck the rear of the disabled Hyundai. The impact sent the vehicle over the concrete railing of a bridge.
“To know my daughter was to love my daughter,” said Vanessa Williams, Va'Necia's mother. “I love my daughter, that's my first born… and my first two grandkids,” she added, expressing her profound grief.
Relatives were devastated by the news. Celissa Williams, a family member, recalled receiving a heartbreaking phone call in the early hours. “My cousin just screaming to the top of her lungs, saying that she's gone,” she said.
Officials confirmed that the truck driver was uninjured in the collision. The incident is currently under investigation by authorities, who underscore the importance of safely handling vehicle breakdowns.
“If you become disabled on the roadway, put your hazard lights on and try to move off the road if possible,” advised Juan Gutierrez from DPS. “If you can't get off the road, ensure you and your passengers are out of traffic.”
The Williams family has launched a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses as they navigate this devastating loss.
