IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden is recovering from a foot injury sustained during the 2026 Indianapolis 500 on May 24.
Newgarden, a Hendersonville native and the defending champion of the Music City Grand Prix, attended a trophy unveiling event at Gibson Guitar Garage on July 9 using crutches and a walking boot on his left foot.
The Music City Grand Prix is scheduled for July 19 at Nashville Superspeedway, broadcasting on Fox Sports after the World Cup final, which begins at 2 p.m. CST.
Authorities confirmed that Newgarden has not provided details about the injury since the Indy 500 crash. “I'm keeping the foot stuff close to (the vest) right now,” Newgarden stated, emphasizing the ongoing progress of his team despite the setback.
Post-injury, Newgarden finished tenth at the Grand Prix of Detroit on May 31, won the Grand Prix of Illinois on June 7, placed 22nd at the Grand Prix of Road America, and finished ninth at the Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio on July 5.
Prior to the injury, Newgarden secured a victory at the Phoenix race on March 7, and currently stands sixth in the IndyCar Series points standings with 270 points, trailing Alex Palou, who leads with 404 points.
