A semi-truck crashed into concrete barriers near Cincinnati's Lytle Tunnel before 6:50 p.m. Sunday, May 3, igniting a fire that killed the driver.
According to the Cincinnati Police Department, the semi, headed toward the Lytle Tunnel, lost control, struck a west-side barrier, crossed over, and hit the east-side barrier before catching fire with the driver still inside.
Assistant Fire Chief Matt Flagler said heavy fire engulfed the cab and trailer. Firefighters removed the trapped driver, who died from injuries. The driver's name has not been released.
Interstate 71 and Columbia Parkway reopened Monday morning. Roads and exits on Fort Washington Way were closed overnight, and overpasses and bridges were inspected and cleared late Sunday, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. Due to previously scheduled Lytle Tunnel maintenance, I-71 north remained closed overnight.
Police said speed does not appear to be a contributing factor. Officers are investigating whether impairment played a role. Authorities did not say if any other vehicles were involved.
Witnesses are asked to contact the Cincinnati Police Traffic Unit at 513-352-2514.
