Columbus — One person died and another was critically injured in a crash early April 13 on I-270 near Georgesville Road.

Officers were dispatched at 2:41 a.m. to southbound I-270 on Columbus' West Side, according to the Columbus Division of Police.

Sgt. Joe Albert said the at-fault driver initially entered the freeway the wrong way at West Broad Street, then turned around and was heading the correct direction at the time of the crash.

After the collision, the driver fled on foot and was taken into custody a short distance away, Albert said.

One person was at the scene. Another was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

All southbound lanes from the I-70 interchange to Harrisburg Pike were closed and reopened by about 7:30 a.m., according to an ODOT live traffic map.

The ramps from I-70 to I-270 south were also closed and have since reopened, authorities said.

Albert said information on potential charges was not yet available.
