BOSTON—Hundreds gathered Thursday evening to honor Louisa Gag, a city transportation planner killed in a biking accident last week.
Gag, 35, was struck by a truck in Mission Hill on July 9 while riding her bicycle. According to the Boston Police Department, the incident is under investigation, but no charges have been filed.
Mayor Michelle Wu spoke at the vigil, emphasizing Gag's commitment to creating safer streets. “Louisa wanted a Vision Zero city,” Wu said. “A city where everyone could access every opportunity.”
Gag was a strong advocate for Vision Zero Boston, an initiative aiming to eliminate fatal and severe traffic crashes in the city by 2030. “We owe Louisa more than our grief. We owe her action,” Wu added, announcing stepped-up enforcement for bike lane violations and plans for improved cycling infrastructure.
Fellow cyclist Megan Stokes expressed the community's loss, stating, “She was so young. It happened too soon.”
Witnesses reported Gag's dedication to cycling and community safety. The vigil served as a poignant reminder of the work needed to protect cyclists in Boston.
