KEAʻAU, Hawaiʻi Island (Island News) — A 64-year-old Hilo man is in critical condition following a motorcycle crash on Thursday evening.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:26 p.m. on Highway 11, between Macadamia Nut Road and Kipimana Street. According to the Hawaiʻi Police Department, a gray 2013 Honda CR-V traveling south toward Keaʻau was rear-ended by a 2003 Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle.
Emergency responders transported the motorcyclist to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. Police confirmed that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The 38-year-old driver of the Honda and a passenger were uninjured.
The Hawaiʻi Police Department's Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit is leading the investigation. Authorities indicated that speed and driver inattention may have been contributing factors.
