Father Charged in Downeast Maine Crash that Killed 5-Year-Old Son
DOWNEAST MAINE, June 25 — A father faces multiple charges following a crash that killed his 5-year-old son and left his 10-month-old daughter hospitalized.
Dion Campbell, 33, of Elkhart, Indiana, was arrested on June 25 and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated driving to endanger, criminal operating under the influence, and manslaughter. Authorities confirmed he is being held without bail pending a court appearance on Wednesday.
The single-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 193. According to Maine State Police, neither the 5-year-old boy, seated in the front passenger seat, nor his infant sister were properly restrained at the time of the incident.
A trooper discovered the crash scene shortly before 11:30 p.m. and found the boy's condition deteriorating rapidly. Life-saving measures were initiated but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Campbell and his daughter were transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with non-life-threatening injuries; no updates on the infant's condition were available as of Wednesday.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and subsequently struck an embankment. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
