ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. — A wrong-way crash on I-196 South closed the highway for several hours late Sunday night.
According to the Allegan County Sheriff's Office, authorities received reports of a wrong-way driver shortly after 11:30 p.m. Units responding to the scene found multiple semi trucks involved in the collision near the Holland St. exit, close to Saugatuck.
Emergency responders extracted the wrong-way driver from the vehicle; however, the individual succumbed to their injuries at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and no additional vehicles were involved in the crash. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities noted that alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the incident. The highway was reopened to traffic shortly after 5:30 a.m. Monday as the investigation continued.
