Fatal crash in Polk County leaves one driver dead

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) is investigating a fatal crash involving a dump truck and a BMW that occurred early Friday morning.

According to PCSO, deputies responded to the scene at County Road 557 and Polk City Road around 5:45 a.m. Initial reports indicate that the BMW was traveling westbound while the dump truck was headed eastbound. The BMW attempted to overtake several vehicles by moving into the eastbound lane, leading to a as both drivers swerved to avoid each other.

Authorities stated that both vehicles ended up on the shoulder of the roadway, where a fire ignited, engulfing the BMW and damaging the dump truck's engine compartment. The driver of the BMW was found trapped inside the vehicle and was at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released due to extensive fire damage. The dump truck driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
