STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — A fatal crash involving a charter bus and multiple vehicles occurred at 2:35 a.m. Friday on Interstate 95 near mile marker 146, resulting in the deaths of five individuals.
The Acura caught fire post-collision, prompting first responders to rescue victims trapped in burning vehicles. Katie Brady, a public information officer for Stafford County Fire and Rescue, praised the emergency crews for their life-saving efforts.
A total of 44 individuals were transported to local hospitals; as of Friday afternoon, six remained hospitalized, with some sustaining life-threatening injuries.
The bus, which had left New York City around 8:30 p.m. Thursday headed for Charlotte, North Carolina, was carrying 34 passengers at the time of the incident. The bus driver, 48-year-old Jing Dong of Staten Island, was also injured and underwent surgery before being taken into custody. Charges are pending.
The National Transportation Safety Board has sent a team to investigate the crash, with a briefing scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The incident remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
