New Orleans, LA – September 5, 2023 – A tragic accident claimed the life of 14-year-old Damiri Eves earlier today, as he was struck by a pickup truck while riding a gas-powered scooter at Norman Mayer Avenue and Gentilly Boulevard, according to the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD).
Eves, a sophomore at Abramson Sci Academy and baritone horn player in the school band, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Authorities reported that the truck's driver is cooperating with the investigation, and no charges are expected.
At the scene, Mayor Helena Moreno and city officials met with Eves' family, who urged the community to prioritize scooter safety. Witnesses reported that several of Eves' bandmates were present to offer support at the crash site and later visited the family home.
His father, Harry Eves III, expressed his grief, stating, “It's hard to process.” He described Damiri as an “all-around good kid” with a passion for music and video games.
Johnnie Van Buren, the band director, noted Eves had shown significant improvement in his playing skills before the incident. Despite the tragedy, Eves' bandmates honored him at the evening game against Sarah T. Reed, with fellow baritone player Purnell Russell stating, “It means a lot just to honor him.”
Eves' older brother, a tuba player, chose to perform that night as well, dedicating his performance to his sibling.
