**Lynnfield, Mass. —** New surveillance video from early Wednesday morning captures a wrong-way driver moments before a fatal crash on Route 1 that killed Massachusetts State Trooper Kevin Trainor and Hernan Marrero.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when Marrero, driving a Jeep Wrangler, entered a jug handle on Route 1 North. Instead of crossing the roadway, he made a sharp left turn into oncoming traffic, heading south in the northbound lanes. At the time, another vehicle traveling correctly had a green light.
Subsequent footage from Kelly Jeep's cameras near the Lynnfield Tunnel shows Marrero's Jeep emerging from the tunnel while driving in the wrong direction. Authorities reported that Marrero crashed head-on into Trooper Trainor's vehicle.
Trooper Trainor, who was returning home from his shift but responded to a call regarding the wrong-way driver, succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Marrero was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing signage in the area to ensure drivers are adequately warned against wrong-way travel.
