STRAITS OF MACKINAC, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — A 28-year-old man from Jamaica was arrested following a serious crash on the Mackinac Bridge early Wednesday morning.
Michigan State Police (MSP) responded to the two-vehicle incident at approximately 2:55 a.m. Preliminary investigations indicate that multiple vehicles passed through the toll booths on southbound I-75 before accelerating recklessly, with the crash occurring in a construction zone that restricts southbound traffic to one lane.
Authorities reported that one vehicle struck the rear of another. Two individuals suffered serious injuries, while two others sustained non-life-threatening injuries; all four were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The driver identified as at fault was arrested and is being held in the Mackinac County Jail on a felony charge of reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function. MSP is withholding his name pending arraignment, and additional charges may be considered as the investigation continues.
Emergency crews temporarily closed the Mackinac Bridge while responding to the incident, but it reopened shortly thereafter. Investigators are also looking into other drivers who may have been recklessly operating vehicles on the bridge.
