Commerce City Shuttle Bus Crash Leads to Criminal Charges

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — The Commerce City Police Department has recommended criminal charges against a shuttle bus driver following a deadly crash near Denver International Airport on July 12.

The incident occurred around midnight at E. 81st Avenue and Tower Road. According to authorities, a pickup truck was traveling south on Tower Road when a shuttle bus, waiting to turn left on a flashing yellow arrow, turned directly in front of the truck, which had the right-of-way. The truck subsequently struck the shuttle bus.

John Hughes, 77, died in the crash, while ten others sustained injuries. Hughes' family reported they had traveled from Oregon for a reunion. Both the driver and passenger of the pickup truck were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Commerce City PD announced that their investigation concluded with recommended charges against the bus driver, Kwame Adjei-Broni, including careless driving causing death, careless driving causing injury, and . Investigators will forward their findings to the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office for a final decision on charges.

The police department thanked the public for their patience during the complex investigation.
