BOCA RATON, Fla. — A grieving mother is advocating for road safety changes after her son died in a crash last month.
Kym Lugo is urging Palm Beach County to implement speed bumps and additional traffic lights in the Watergate Estates community following the death of her son, Alexander Acevedo, on July 16, 2025. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Acevedo was struck by a vehicle that veered into his lane while he was riding his scooter on Sandalfoot Boulevard. He succumbed to his injuries.
Lugo highlighted the prevalence of speeding in the area, specifically on the 10520 block of Sandalfoot Boulevard. “The speed limit is 30. The cars are just flying by, doing about maybe 50, 60,” she stated.
On Monday, Lugo initiated a petition aimed at convincing local authorities to prioritize road safety enhancements. “I hope we can get some community leaders involved and they see how dangerous this is for the families here,” she added.
Residents have reported ongoing struggles to secure speed bumps, noting that requests have been repeatedly denied. Carolyn Swanson, a local resident, remarked, “Every time we ask for it or put a request for it, we get denied for one reason or another.”
WPTV has reached out to Palm Beach County's Engineering and Public Works Traffic Division for further details regarding the residents' requests but has not yet received a response.
Lugo remains committed to advocating for road improvements, emphasizing that enhanced safety measures could have saved her son. “It pains me to know that perhaps if there was something in place to have slowed down that driver, maybe his injuries wouldn't have been fatal,” she said.
