Crash Claims Life of 78-Year-Old; Legal Questions Arise

Houma, LA — The attorney for former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy, who died by suicide in April 2024, challenged the Louisiana State Police's account of a fatal crash during a Houma TV interview on Friday.

Attorney Matt Ory represented Lacy when he turned himself in on charges of negligent homicide, felony hit and run, and reckless operation of a vehicle. Ory stated Lacy was nearly 100 yards behind the that killed 78-year-old Herman Hall of Thibodaux on Dec. 17, 2024, which undermines claims of his responsibility for the crash.

LSP reports indicated that Lacy's Charger was involved in that contributed to the incident. According to investigators, Lacy's swerved and passed other vehicles, leading a Kia Cadenza to crash into a Kia Sorrento, which resulted in Hall's injuries. He was taken to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

Ory presented body camera footage showing discrepancies in witness accounts regarding emergency braking associated with Lacy's vehicle. He emphasized that the witness did not corroborate the police narrative.

Lacy, a three-star recruit who caught 112 passes for 1,692 yards during his college career, took his life shortly before a grand jury hearing that Ory believes would have cleared him.

LSP stated their investigation was thorough and included input from crash reconstruction experts. They maintained that Lacy's actions were a contributing factor in the crash.

Ory cited the DA's report, noting it did not support claims that Lacy could have anticipated the crash occurring ahead of him.
