CASCADE, Idaho — A couple from Washington faces a lengthy recovery following a serious crash on Highway 55 on September 22.
According to Idaho State Police, Roger and Debbie Harding were traveling in a Ford Escape toward Boise when a northbound Chevrolet Malibu crossed into their lane and collided with them. The Hardings were celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary in McCall.
Witnesses reported that the Malibu was attempting to pass slower vehicles when the collision occurred. ISP confirmed the Malibu's lane violation but has not established the exact cause of the accident, which remains under investigation.
Both Hardings sustained multiple fractures, including pelvic and sacrum fractures requiring surgery for Roger, along with a shattered heel. Debbie suffered fractures to both ankles and one hand, along with sternum fractures for both.
“It's been especially hard for them,” said their daughter, Jenny Fitch. “They're very active people, and now they feel helpless.”
Fitch noted that her parents could only see each other twice since the accident. She is currently raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical and recovery expenses.
Idaho State Police Trooper Emily Daniels emphasized the dangers of unsafe passing on Highway 55. “Drivers need adequate visibility and space to complete maneuvers safely,” she advised.
All four individuals involved were hospitalized. The Hardings were wearing seatbelts, whereas the Malibu's driver and passenger, both 24 years old, were not and were flown to a local hospital. The crash closed Highway 55 for approximately three-and-a-half hours.
