HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A 56-year-old Gainesville woman died in a four-car crash on Interstate 75 on Saturday morning, authorities said.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report, the incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. as the woman was driving a Hyundai Sonata southbound on I-75. She changed lanes, colliding with a Mazda 6 operated by a 30-year-old woman from New York.
The collision caused the Sonata to careen into the median, strike a guardrail, overturn, and enter northbound traffic.
In the northbound lanes, the Sonata struck a Kia Sorento driven by a 57-year-old woman from Riverview. Debris from the crash also hit a Honda Civic driven by a 72-year-old woman from Maryland.
The Gainesville woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Sorento sustained minor injuries, while no other injuries were reported.
The crash resulted in lane closures, with the northbound lanes of I-75 remaining closed until 5 p.m., according to authorities. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
