BOSTON — Surveillance footage shows an 81-year-old driver entering Interstate 93 incorrectly before a crash that left one man dead and injured a family on June 27.

The video, released by MASSDOT, captured Antone Carvalho of Somerset making a wrong turn from the Mass Ave ramp onto Frontage Road. He then entered I-93 going the wrong way, leading to a series of collisions.

Authorities confirmed that as Carvalho merged into traffic, a family of four in a Odyssey attempted to avoid him, subsequently crashing. Carvalho's vehicle struck a Cruze head-on, resulting in the death of a Haverhill man in his 20s.

Carvalho sustained undisclosed injuries and was transported to a local hospital. He is expected to face charges pending the investigation.

This incident marks the second fatal wrong-way crash in Massachusetts in just three days, following another tragic collision on I-290 East where 43-year-old Sheena Grandpre was killed. In May, a Massachusetts State Trooper, Kevin Trainor, also lost his life in a related incident.

In response to these recent tragedies, Governor Maura Healey announced an expansion of a statewide detection system for wrong-way drivers. This initiative has been in development for approximately one year.

Massachusetts State Police encourage motorists to avoid the left lane, drive in the right lane, exit the highway if possible, and call 911 if they encounter a wrong-way driver.
