Haverhill Man Dies in Wrong-Way Crash on I-93 in Boston
BOSTON, MA — A wrong-way crash on Interstate 93 claimed the life of Riley Sergi, a 28-year-old Haverhill resident, early Sunday morning.
According to Massachusetts State Police, troopers responded just before midnight to reports of a multi-vehicle collision on I-93 northbound near Exit 15A. Sergi was driving a Chevrolet Cruze, which collided head-on with an 81-year-old Somerset man's Cadillac Escalade, which had entered the highway traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.
Authorities confirmed that both drivers were transported to Boston-area hospitals, where Sergi succumbed to his injuries. The condition of the wrong-way driver remains unverified as of Monday. A Honda Odyssey and an Audi A4 also attempted to evade the wrong-way vehicle, resulting in additional damage. The family of four in the Odyssey was taken to a Boston hospital for evaluation.
The investigation is ongoing. Massachusetts State Police are examining dashcam footage and have not yet filed charges against the wrong-way driver. District Attorney Kevin Hayden stated, “I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Sergi and assure them that the investigation will be thorough.”
The fatal incident marks a troubling trend, as it follows two other deadly wrong-way crashes in Massachusetts within the past week. Governor Maura Healey previously announced a road safety initiative aimed at combating wrong-way driving incidents through advanced detection technology and improved signage.
