TITUSVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 7, 2023) – A Florida police chief was fired after refusing to submit to an alcohol test following an off-duty crash in a city-owned vehicle.
The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. near River Oaks Drive and Barna Avenue, just outside Titusville's city limits. Officers reported discovering a “partially consumed” bottle of vodka inside the SUV assigned to then-Chief John Lau.
Medics transported Lau to a nearby hospital for minor injuries. According to authorities, while recovering, a police commander requested he undergo alcohol testing. Lau refused, violating the city's personnel policy, leading to his termination after discussions with the city manager.
Witnesses at the scene noted the smell of alcohol, and officers described Lau as having bloodshot eyes. Interim Police Chief Tyler Wright issued a statement expressing regret over the incident, emphasizing that it does not reflect the department's values.
The Florida Highway Patrol has assumed control of the investigation since the crash took place outside Titusville's jurisdiction. They concluded that no criminal charges would be filed against Lau, but further details regarding their decision are pending.
Lau had been serving as police chief since 2013.
