NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — During Child Passenger Safety Week, nearly half of car seats are found to be installed incorrectly, jeopardizing child safety.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 46% of car and booster seats are improperly installed, often without caregivers' knowledge. Crashes are a leading cause of death among children, with a 2023 study indicating two fatalities and 345 injuries daily on average.
To address this issue, the NHTSA is offering resources to help families correctly install car seats. National Seat Check Saturday is scheduled for this Saturday, where families can receive free installation guidance. More than 30 locations in Nashville and surrounding areas will participate in the event.
The NHTSA website provides an online tool to locate nearby inspection sites, along with information on various car seat types and installation videos.
