Prosecutors say two women were killed in a hit-and-run while walking home from a World Cup event.

A 26-year-old Newark man surrendered Tuesday after a Saturday night in Newark killed two women in a crosswalk.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the suspect was identified as David J. Zapata-Vera, 26, of Newark.

Prosecutors said Zapata-Vera struck the women while they were in a crosswalk on Saturday night and fled the scene.

The victims were identified as Mariana Elizabeth Valverde Beltran, 58, and Maria Isabel DeLosAngeles Salgado Ayala, 61. Authorities said both were taken to University Hospital, where they were .

Authorities said Zapata-Vera is charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, two counts of second-degree leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, and two counts of third-degree endangering an injured victim.
