CALIFORNIA (TNND) — An Air Force B-52 crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Monday, resulting in the presumed deaths of eight personnel onboard.

According to military officials, the incident has been deemed “unsurvivable.” Rescue efforts have transitioned to recovery operations following the crash.

Emergency crews responded immediately, and inbound aircraft were diverted to ensure safety. Witnesses reported seeing black smoke rising from the crash site.

The B-52 Stratofortress was on a standard test mission when it went down on the Edwards airfield. Edwards Air Force Base serves as a testing ground for the U.S. Air Force and NASA.

Authorities stated the B-52 remains integral to U.S. military air power, having been introduced in the 1950s. It is designed to carry both conventional and nuclear weapons over extensive distances.

In a social media post, Edwards AFB expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and unit members at this time.” Further details will be provided as they become available.
