TULSA, Okla. (WKRC) — A father has been sentenced to prison following a crash that resulted in the death of his 16-year-old daughter.
Elliott Binney, 42, received a five-year prison sentence and five years probation after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to the January 11, 2024, incident, which killed his daughter, Shelby Binney.
According to investigators, Binney lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over multiple times. Shelby was found critically injured and later died from her injuries. Several juvenile passengers were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed in rainy conditions and passing other vehicles in a no-passing zone before the accident. An open bottle of vodka was discovered near the scene, and Binney admitted to consuming some while driving.
Authorities said Binney fled the crash site on foot but was located approximately 40 miles away in Checotah. Despite the evidence, prosecutors noted insufficient proof to demonstrate Binney was legally impaired at the time of the crash.
Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler stated that Binney's actions after the incident significantly influenced the sentencing decision.
